What our clients are saying...

"We have found Dr. Baker to be incredible in small animal care over the many years our animals have been her patients.  In the past, if a situation arose for which she needed more information she would consult experts in that field. We have been so pleased with her genuine affection for our animals that we highly recommend her to others when asked about our veterinarian." - Bill & Avilda Kline

"Ever see a dog excited to go to the vet?  If not you must meet our yellow Labrador, Concho.  All you have to do is say Dr. Baker’s name and she gets excited.  Once we are at the office she barks and tries to get behind the front desk, looking for Dr. Baker. Dr. Baker started taking care of Concho, as an eight week old puppy.  During the last ten years of … Spaying, knee surgery, annual exams, shots and other various dog issues … she has continued to care for Concho with love and compassion.  It isn’t a surprise Concho loves her. Last year we added another yellow Labrador puppy to our family.  Mogul the Manic, as she is lovingly called is also a huge fan of Dr. Baker and the new Damonte Ranch Animal Hospital staff.  I’m sure that in no time, she too will bark enthusiastically at the mention of Dr. Baker’s name." - The Dunn Family

"I had recently moved from Pennsylvania when my cat, Hydro, became ill.  I immediately called the Damonte Ranch Animal Hospital, where Dr. Baker and her staff were very helpful and made the time, that morning, to evaluate Hydro’s condition.  I found Dr. Baker and her staff to be very pleasant, as well as extremely thorough and knowledgeable.  Dr. Baker made herself available to me beyond normal business hours and followed up repeatedly as to the status of my cat’s recovery.  I have been extremely pleased with the service and kindness I have received from Dr. Baker and the staff  at Damonte Ranch Animal Hospital and would recommend them to anyone in the area looking for a compassionate and knowledgeable veterinarian." - Janeen Maruskanic

"In all my years of owning animals and choosing vets to take care of their healthcare needs I have never met a better vet than Dr. Shelby Baker.  I first met her when I still lived in Truckee and my cat Cuddles was sick.  She doesn’t like to do shotgun therapy and guess what might be the problem.  She likes to know exactly what she is dealing with and make sure that she and her clients are choosing the right treatment.  At that time she was filling in for a vet for Donner Truckee Veterinary Clinic.  She was in the process of opening up her own clinic in Reno and when I moved here I made her the vet for all my animals.  She is the only vet I know that will take time out of her personal/family time to call you and let you know how your animal is doing and what she and you need to do next to bring your animal back to health.  You would be hard pressed to find a more caring vet." - Kelly Giufurta

"I live in San Diego, but my Veterinarian is in Reno.  Why?  The long answer follows but the short answer is she works harder and cares more than any Vet I’ve met.

I brought my greyhound, Dante, to Reno to visit family about three years ago.  He wasn’t doing well so we took him to the nearest Vet who happened to be Dr. Baker.  She diagnosed him with Valley Fever, a disease that is uncommon in both California and Nevada.  Even though she had no reasonable expectation that she would ever see Dante again, she spent more time diagnosing and setting up a treatment plan than Vets I’ve worked with in San Diego.  She talked with specialists in several states to get the best information available.  Further, Dante was very comfortable there.  When she left the room, he would stare at the door until she returned.

When Dante was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, bone cancer, I did look for treatment in San Diego.  However, the Vet I went to here immediately referred me to a specialist.  The specialist was all pressure and no explanation.  Dante didn’t like him either.  When we went there, he was very stressed.  This was unusual for a normally compliant and gentle dog and boded poorly for treatment.  So I asked Dr. Baker for her opinion.  After talking with her, I made the decision to come to Reno so she could treat him.

We had to amputate the affected leg.  It was a hard decision and there were some complications.  Again, through several months of treatment, she was in touch with specialists and colleagues to ensure she was providing the very best care possible.

But!!  Dante was so loved and he so trusted Dr. Baker and her staff, he would trot in to the clinic like it was home.  They were his friends … even though he lost a leg there!

I cannot describe how much Dr. Baker and her team meant to Dante and I.  I am so sad to say that Dante didn’t survive his disease.  I can happily say, though, that the care he – no, WE – received was the kind of care we expect of our own doctors and hospitals but so often don’t receive.

One more thing:  the doctor is critical, but the care team is too.  Dr. Baker has assembled and leads a staff that are gentle, caring and able.  I respect them as much as the Doc herself.  I say this not only having had my own friend treated by then, but having met many pets and owners there.  This is where you want to be." - Susan McDonald

“The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself, too.” -Samuel Butler
